Understanding Root Chakra Essential Oils

A Guide to Grounding and Balance

The human body is a complex physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual energy system. In yoga and Traditional Chinese Medicine, these energies flow through over 70,000 nadis, meridians, or energy channels and intersect at various points in our bodies. In yogic philosophy, seven main chakra energy centers run along the spine from the base to the top of the head. Each chakra corresponds to different aspects of our physical, emotional, cognitive, and energetic well-being – or our Koshas – the layers of ourselves. In this blog post, we explore the significance of the root chakra, how it impacts our lives, and how specific root chakra essential oils can help balance and heal this vital energy chakra center.

The Names of the Seven Main Chakras.

What is the Root Chakra?

The root chakra, or Muladhara in Sanskrit, is located at the base of the spine, extending into our feet. The root chakra is the first chakra and the foundation of our energy system. Governing our most basic needs of survival, including food, shelter, safety, and security. The Root Chakra has connections to the Color Bright Red.

With a balanced root chakra, we feel safe, grounded, stable, and have a sense of security. We can face challenges with confidence, inner strength, and personal power. We maintain healthy relationships and manifest our desires quickly and gracefully.

On the other hand, a blocked or unbalanced root chakra may cause us to experience feelings of fear, anxiety, restlessness, lack of focus, and insecurity. We may also struggle with abundance or our perceptions of it. Physical symptoms of a Blocked root chakra include fatigue, lower back pain, teeth, and bone issues, overall balance problems, and various concerns with our physical body.

The Power of Root Chakra Essential Oils in Chakra Healing

Root chakra essential oils are made from highly concentrated plant extracts. These extracts capture the essence of a plant’s fragrance and therapeutic properties. Essential Oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for healing, spiritual rituals, and overall well-being.

In chakra healing, these essential oils can balance and energize the root chakra by promoting the desired qualities associated with that energy center. Essential oils that are grounding, calming, warming, and earthy are most supportive regarding the root chakra. These root chakra essential oils can help bring us back to our center, promote feelings of stability and security, and encourage a strong connection to the Earth.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is one of the simplest ways to use root chakra essential oils for balancing. Adding a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a diffuser allows the scent to fill your space. This will help to create a calming and grounding environment, promoting balance and stability.

Topical Application

Essential oils can also be applied topically to the body to promote root chakra healing. To do this, dilute a few drops of your chosen root chakra essential oil in a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil, and massage it into the base of your spine, lower back, or the soles of your feet. These areas are closely associated with the root chakra and will help to anchor and balance your flow of energy.

This is a lovely practice for when you wake up, as we reconnect with our bodies, or as you thank your body for carrying you through the day as you drift off to sleep.

Meditation

Incorporating root chakra essential oils into your grounding meditation practice is another powerful way to balance the root chakra. Before you begin your meditation, apply a small amount of essential oil to your pulse points, such as your wrists, temples, or the base of your spine.

As you meditate, focus on your root chakra and visualize a warm, red light at the base of your spine. The essential oil’s scent will help deepen your connection to the Earth and promote a sense of grounding and stability.

Bathing

Adding root chakra essential oils to your bath is a luxurious way to promote root chakra healing. Add a few drops of essential oil to a warm bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. Combining warm water and the essential oils’ grounding scent will help relax your body and mind, promoting a sense of calm and security.

Other Practices to Nourish Your Root Chakra

In addition to using root chakra essential oils to nourish your root chakra, you can also consider eating more grounding, warming foods and enjoying more time in nature to move your body and connect with the Earth.

Repeating Root Chakra Affirmations supporting personal growth and inner strength, such as “I am worthy” or “I am safe,” can remind you that you have all you need.

You can incorporate root chakra crystals, such as hematite and red jasper, in your meditation or yoga practice to encourage greater grounding and confidence. I like to carry a crystal around with me as a reminder. Choose one that speaks to you, or leave a few throughout your home. We are energy, and by drawing upon the koshas, we can nourish the root chakra through various approaches.

Purchasing High-Grade Root Chakra Essential Oils

If you want to enjoy the health benefits of essential oils, it will depend on the oil’s quality. Root chakra essential oils have been used for thousands of years in physical and energetic healing and are beginning to be explored more for their antimicrobial and other properties. If you are curious to learn more, you can explore the International Federation of Aromatherapists. If you have children in your home or intend to use any oils with children, please refer to the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia.

When using essential oils, please consider where they are sourced, product contents, what other oils they might be blended with, and how they are harvested. Many oils are unfortunately not pure and may be cut with other cheaper oils.

Remember you are using them for energetic and health purposes, so we want to ensure they are pure essential oils and that the environment they are from is also cared for, just like the food we put in our bodies. Our skin is our biggest organ, and what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream.

Over thirty years, I have tried and been exposed to many brands, and my absolute favorites are Fern + Petal. Their oils are pure, wild-crafted essential oils sourced from small farmers who care for the land these plants are grown on. Care is taken in each process step to bring these oils to you, and you can tell.
